When you’re installing utilities underground, precision isn’t optional—it’s essential to staying safe, compliant, and profitable. That’s why Ditch Witch West carries a full lineup of Subsite® Electronics: guidance systems, utility locators, inspection solutions, and software that work together to plan, steer, verify, and document every bore. Below is a streamlined look at the core Subsite tools available through Ditch Witch West and how they support an end-to-end trenchless workflow.

What Is HDD Guidance, and Why Does It Matter?

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) guidance systems give drill operators real-time position, depth, pitch, and heading of the downhole tool so they can steer along plan, avoid conflicts, and hit target endpoints.

HDD Guidance Highlights

Commander™ 7

A 7-inch, high-resolution guidance display that streams critical tracking data to the drill seat. Commander 7 pairs with iOS and Android devices, offers multiple view modes (including Advanced Drill-To Mode with PerspectiveView™), and uses an updated radio for longer range and faster data rates, all to speed decision-making and shorten the learning curve. It mounts quickly and works across 12/24 VDC rigs.

Marksman™ / Marksman™ Plus

Built for high-interference environments, Marksman simplifies operation with a single-toggle control and lets you choose Classic View or the intuitive Marksman View. Marksman Plus adds the industry’s widest frequency range in a single beacon to cut through noise on complex bores.

TK RECON™ + RECON™ Repeater

Proven dual-method locating with up to 110 ft (33.5 m) depth capability, improved radio performance, and faster information transfer. TK RECON can map the bore with GPS and supports downloading bore data into TSR Mobile for as-builts. Add the TK RECON Repeater to overcome line-of-sight challenges and extend telemetry range; its portable, freestanding design runs more than 50 hours on a full charge.

HDD Beacons

Repairable (an industry exclusive) and backed by a 3-year/750-hour warranty, Subsite’s 15T/17T/19T HDD beacons offer field-configurable power levels and automatic tuning for consistent performance across different downhole housings. New modules add Bluetooth connectivity and higher operating temperatures: ideal when jobs get tough.

Software That Connects the Job

Field Scout™ (Mobile Bore Planning)

Walk the intended path with your iPhone or Android device, mark entry/exit pits and utility crossings, set minimum separations, attach photos, and email plans for approval. Field Scout replaces paper notes, reduces transcription errors, and lets you push plans straight into Commander 7 via ScoutView.

ScoutView™ (On-Rig Visualization and Logging)

Use ScoutView to upload your Field Scout plan to Commander 7 and monitor the bore in real-time from the drill seat. See upcoming waypoints, get audible/visual temperature alerts, log data as you go, and finish with accurate reports.

TMS Plus

With TMS Plus, plan multiple scenarios, monitor progress pipe-by-pipe, and build a complete record with bend radius references and rod-by-rod position data, all designed to streamline jobs and support efficient reporting.

TSR Mobile

Replace manual bore logs with TSR Mobile. Download data from the tracker to your phone/tablet/laptop, review the pitch-based profile, add job details, and email an as-built (including KML/GPX files for mapping) from the field to accelerate documentation and billing.

Utility Locators and GPR

UtiliGuard 2

UtiliGuard 2 is a direction-enabled locator with integrated data capture, GPS, and AIM (Ambient Interference Measurement) to help crews choose optimal frequencies and prove performance. Remote transmitter control and dual-output options speed locates across multiple services.

GeoRanger

The GeoRanger XR Series offers dual-frequency antennas (350/750 MHz), cable-free setup, magnetic field sensor, and a rugged all-terrain cart that gets you scanning fast. XR2 adds integrated GPS, RTK compatibility, ESS cloud/software workflow, and a rugged tablet for in-field processing, so you can see more, sooner.

Locating Beacons

From 512 Hz to 33 kHz, Subsite locating beacons pair with receivers like UtiliGuard to trace metallic and non-metallic pipe, navigate bends, and locate blockages.

Pipe Inspection Systems You Can Configure to the Job

Inspection is where trenchless projects begin and how you prove quality at the end. Ditch Witch West offers Subsite inspection systems across these categories: Accessories, Cable/Reels, Controllers, Portable Drainline Systems, Portable Mainline Systems, Transporters/Cameras, and Vehicle-Mounted Systems.

Browse all pipe inspection subcategories and models on our site to configure the reel, controller, camera, and transporter package that fits your work.

How to Choose the Right Subsite Gear

Every site is different: soil conditions, interference, depth targets, and permit requirements all drive the best fit. Bring your bore plan (or let us help you build one). Our product specialists will match guidance, beacons, and locators to your rig and terrain, and spec the inspection package that fits your pipe sizes and access constraints.

C30X vs. RT125: When to Upgrade from a Walk-Behind to a Ride-On Trencher

Selecting the right trencher comes down to scope, surface, and speed. Compact walk-behind units like the Ditch Witch C30X and heavy-duty ride-on trenchers like the RT125 are both proven performers, but they excel in different environments. If you’re wondering when to stick with a nimble walk-behind and when it’s time to step up to a…
